10,000+ Companies Are Registering to Cut Emissions
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has reached a landmark milestone: over 10,000 companies worldwide now hold validated science-based emissions reduction targets sciencebasedtargets, with a total of 13,102 businesses holding active targets and commitments, including 2,458 net-zero pledges sciencebasedtargets.
These commitments are structured around a clear deadline: companies must reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest sciencebasedtargets, with near-term milestones typically set for 2030–2035 to demonstrate credible progress on the pathway.
This wave of corporate climate action is no longer just a voluntary reputational exercise. The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is now creating direct financial consequences for companies whose supply chains — particularly in steel, cement, chemicals, and fertilizers — carry high embedded carbon. Exporters into Europe without measurable decarbonization roadmaps will face increasing carbon levies, making SBTi commitments a de facto trade compliance requirement.
Among surveyed companies with validated targets, 91% reported a positive overall business impact, 95% noted enhanced reputation, and 76% experienced increased investor confidence.
When these commitments are fully delivered, the collective impact is estimated at over 4 gigatons of CO₂ reduced annually by 2030 — equivalent to removing more than 850 million cars from the road, and a decisive step toward keeping global heating below 1.5°C.
